Black and White

Black and White photography is to modern day
photography what the Model T was to the modern
automobile. It was the starting, the original, the
building blocks, and without a fundamental understanding
of this classic art form, the present state of
photography would be no where near as advanced as it is
today. This is why Sam Johnston specializes and loves
taking photos in black and white. B&W is a form of
photography which is not simply picked up by some one on
a whim. Without proper instruction as to shutter speeds,
light angles, redirection of light, and much, much more,
black and white photos often turn up either too dark or
too bright, with not enough contrast between the two, or
too much contrast so you can't see what's hidden in the
shadows, or people appear to be shapes, not people.
Objects meld into one another's shadow and there is very
little difference between them. Sam Johnston has been
specializing in Black and White portraits, and photos in earnest for just under thirty
years since taking master classes with the master of Black and
White photography, Ansel Adams, who actually asked Sam
to help instruct some of his classes at following
classes in the late 70s.
A well done black and white portrait or photograph can,
and does, add an air of prestige to any situation. But
if its not done right, then, well, it just looks shoddy.
Sam Johnston does them right, just scroll down to see
